This is followed by air-polishing — a controlled spray of fine powder and water — to remove soft plaque and surface stains from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, leaving the teeth visibly cleaner and smoother. A fluoride varnish is then applied to help remineralise and strengthen the enamel and reduce sensitivity. Keeping plaque and tartar under control is the single most effective way to lower the risk of tooth decay and of gum disease, which is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
