- Comfortable reclining position
A 40-minute intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT) session that alternates between low-oxygen and high-oxygen breathing phases through a mask. This passive protocol is designed to challenge and strengthen mitochondrial function without requiring any physical exertion, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
About this treatment
Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT) delivers alternating cycles of oxygen-reduced air (simulating high-altitude conditions) and oxygen-enriched air through a breathing mask while the client rests comfortably. Each session at Kairos Longevity Clinic lasts 40 minutes and is monitored to ensure safe oxygen saturation levels throughout the protocol.
The underlying mechanism targets mitochondrial quality. During the low-oxygen phases, cells with poorly functioning mitochondria are placed under selective stress, triggering a natural clearance process known as mitophagy. The subsequent high-oxygen phases may then stimulate the generation of new, more efficient mitochondria — a process called mitochondrial biogenesis. Over a course of sessions, this selective pressure is associated with improved cellular…
Research into IHHT has explored its potential effects on cardiovascular fitness, metabolic efficiency, cognitive performance, and stress resilience. The modality is particularly relevant for individuals who cannot engage in high-intensity exercise due to injury, age, or health limitations but still wish to pursue the cellular conditioning benefits associated with altitude exposure. No physical effort is required during the session.
