Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan in the skin's extracellular matrix; the cross-linked injectable form retains water within its gel structure, providing immediate volumisation and hydration that integrates smoothly with the surrounding tissue. The procedure begins with a detailed lip assessment where the physician evaluates the patient's natural lip anatomy — vermilion height, cupid's bow definition, commissure position, and upper-to-lower lip ratio — and discusses the desired outcome. Whether the goal is subtle hydration and plumping, sharper border definition, or moderate volume addition, the injection technique is adapted accordingly. Common approaches include vermilion border outlining for definition, body filling for volume, and commissure support to address downturned corners. Injection takes approximately 30 minutes and is performed using either a fine needle or blunt-tip cannula depending on the treatment plan.
