The 10,600nm wavelength of the carbon dioxide laser has a high affinity for water in tissue, allowing it to precisely vaporise microscopic columns of skin (microthermal treatment zones) while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This fractional pattern is the key innovation over traditional full-field ablative resurfacing — the untreated columns act as reservoirs of viable cells that accelerate healing and reduce complication risk. Each laser pulse creates a column of ablation approximately 100 to 300 microns in diameter, extending through the epidermis and into the papillary or reticular dermis depending on the energy and pulse duration settings.
