Type
DEXA Scan
Duration
30 min
DEXA scanning at Perth Radiological Clinic Joondalup Shenton House (57 Shenton Avenue, approximately 200 metres from Joondalup Health Campus) for body composition analysis and bone densitometry. Body composition scan measures lean muscle mass, total body fat, and bone mass. Bone densitometry (BMD) assesses spine and hip density for osteoporosis screening. Appointments available Monday to Saturday.
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanning is available through Perth Radiological Clinic at their Joondalup Shenton House location at Level 1 Shenton House, 57 Shenton Avenue — approximately 200 metres from the main Joondalup Health Campus entrance at 60 Shenton Avenue. PRC offers two distinct DEXA applications at this Joondalup site. The first is DEXA Body Composition scanning, a 30-minute assessment that uses the differential X-ray attenuation properties of fat, lean muscle, and bone to produce highly precise segmental measurements of body fat mass, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral content — significantly more accurate than bioelectrical impedance or skinfold calliper methods, and providing regional breakdowns (trunk, arms, legs, android/gynoid fat distribution) that are relevant to metabolic health, cardiovascular risk assessment, and athletic performance monitoring. Body composition DEXA is particularly valuable in Australia for individuals monitoring muscle preservation and fat loss through exercise programs, patients with conditions affecting body composition such as hypothyroidism or insulin resistance, and those assessing response to nutritional interventions. The second application is Bone Densitometry (BMD), a 20-minute scan targeting the lumbar spine and proximal hip — the two sites most relevant to osteoporotic fracture risk assessment — that generates T-score and Z-score outputs to classify bone density as normal, osteopenic, or osteoporotic. BMD DEXA is indicated for postmenopausal women, men over 70, patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy, and individuals with prior fragility fractures. Referral from a GP or specialist is typically required for Medicare rebate eligibility. Appointments at PRC Joondalup Shenton House are available Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm and Saturday 8:30am to 12pm by appointment. Book online at perthradclinic.com.au or call 1300 567 046.
