IPL devices emit a broad-spectrum flash of light filtered to target specific chromophores — melanin for pigmentation concerns, and oxyhemoglobin for vascular lesions and redness. When the targeted chromophore absorbs the light energy, it is converted to heat, selectively damaging the pigment cluster or vessel while leaving surrounding tissue intact. The body's immune cells then clear the fragmented melanin particles over subsequent weeks, and treated vessels contract and are reabsorbed.
