Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Type

Laser

Duration

30 min

ILK's fractional CO2 laser creates a grid of 48 microscopic ablation columns per cm² across the skin, removing damaged epidermal and superficial dermal tissue while leaving surrounding skin intact to accelerate healing. Each pass takes 20–40 minutes depending on the area; the fractional approach means only a fraction of the surface is treated at any given time, dramatically reducing the recovery compared with fully ablative CO2 resurfacing. The laser addresses wrinkles, acne scarring, skin laxity, uneven texture, deep perioral lines, and scar correction. Redness persists for 3–5 days post-treatment as the microcolumns heal and the surrounding untreated tissue drives rapid re-epithelialisation.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing at ILK uses a medical-grade CO2 laser system configured in fractional mode, meaning the beam is delivered through a scanner that distributes energy across 48 microscopic columns per square centimetre rather than ablating the entire surface uniformly. Each micro-column ablates through the full epidermis and into the papillary dermis at the treatment site; the surrounding untreated tissue remains intact and provides the cellular reservoir — keratinocytes and fibroblasts — from which healing proceeds. This fractional geometry is the key distinction from traditional fully ablative CO2 resurfacing: because less than the entire surface is ablated, re-epithelialisation occurs much faster (3–5 days for redness, versus 1–2 weeks for full ablative), making the procedure practical for working patients who cannot take extended leave. The thermal effect within each micro-column is twofold: vaporisation of the ablated zone removes the sun-damaged, pigmented, or scarred tissue; and the surrounding heat halo stimulates collagen remodelling by activating fibroblasts in the adjacent unablated dermis. Collagen remodelling continues for up to 6 months after a single session. Areas treated at ILK include the upper lip (where deep vertical perioral wrinkles are a common indication), chin, cheeks, and scar correction charged per cm². Topical anaesthetic cream is optionally applied before the session. During treatment a short-lived burning sensation accompanies each pass. Post-procedure, the treated surface is covered with a thin layer of vaseline-based moisturiser to protect the healing microcolumns from drying; patients should avoid sun exposure and apply physical sunscreen throughout the recovery. Sessions can be repeated every 4–8 weeks once healing is complete.
