Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule that binds water in the skin; injectable HA gels replace the volume and hydration the face loses with age. Fillers are the treatment of choice for static wrinkles and folds — lines visible at rest, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines — and for restoring deflated volume in the cheeks and mid-face, where lost projection makes the whole face look tired. The treatment takes about 20–30 minutes. Most modern HA fillers contain lidocaine, making injections comfortable; a numbing cream can be applied beforehand. Because HA is gradually resorbed, the treatment is repeatable and adjustable — and dissolvable with hyaluronidase if ever needed.
