Mechanism
Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator that binds to the presynaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction and prevents acetylcholine release. This chemically denervates the targeted muscle, causing temporary paralysis of the hyperdynamic contractions responsible for expression lines. The toxin is irreversible at the molecular level but the neuromuscular junction regenerates over 3–5 months, after which the treatment can be repeated.
