Root canal treatment, or endodontics, addresses the soft tissue (pulp) inside a tooth when it becomes inflamed or infected through deep decay, cracks or trauma. The dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the fine canals inside the roots, disinfects them and then seals the space to prevent reinfection. The aim is to relieve pain and retain a tooth that might otherwise need extraction.
