Each wavelength penetrates tissue at a different depth, with near-infrared light reaching deeper structures including muscles, joints, and connective tissue, while visible red wavelengths are absorbed more superficially by the skin and subcutaneous layer. The photobiomodulation mechanism centres on cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. When photons at these wavelengths are absorbed by this chromophore, they dissociate inhibitory nitric oxide, restoring normal electron flow and increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. This boost in cellular energy supports a range of downstream effects including faster tissue repair, reduced oxidative stress, and modulation of inflammatory pathways.
