A professional clean — scaling and air-polishing — is recommended beforehand so the gel acts on the tooth surface evenly. Some temporary sensitivity is normal and settles afterwards. Whitening is best suited to adults with healthy teeth and gums and natural discolouration; existing crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour, so the dentist will discuss expectations, especially where front-tooth restorations are present, and confirm suitability before starting.
