Tooth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to break down stains and lighten the natural shade of the teeth. It is one of the most conservative ways to refresh a smile because it changes only the colour, without altering tooth structure. Discolouration can come from age, food and drink, smoking or, in the case of a single dark tooth, from previous root-canal treatment, and different situations call for different approaches.

In-office immediate whitening is carried out chairside in a single appointment using a stronger gel for a visible change the same day, with the gums protected during treatment.
