Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that uses powerful magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses to create detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones, and virtually all internal body structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it one of the safest advanced imaging modalities available. MRI provides exceptional soft-tissue contrast, allowing radiologists to differentiate between various tissue types with remarkable precision. Modern MRI scanners at 1.5T or 3T field strengths can produce sub-millimeter resolution images across multiple imaging planes. Each body region has specialized protocols and coils designed to optimize image quality for the anatomy being studied.
Key Details
- Scan Duration
- 30–60 minutes (varies by region)
- Radiation
- None (MRI uses magnetic fields)
- Contrast
- With or without, depending on indication
- Imaging Type
- MRI imaging
- Common Use
- Soft-tissue evaluation, preventive screening
Who Is This For?
Anyone referred for detailed imaging of soft tissues, joints, or internal organs. People pursuing proactive health screening as part of a longevity or preventive medicine program. Those who want detailed internal imaging without radiation exposure. Individuals with findings on other studies (ultrasound, X-ray) that need further characterization.
What's Included
Preparation Required
Remove all metal objects including jewelry, watches, belts, and hair clips before the scan. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners — you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Inform the facility in advance if you have any implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or metal fragments in your body. Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete a safety screening questionnaire. If contrast dye is required, you may be asked to fast for 4 hours beforehand. Inform your technologist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney concerns.
