Composite veneers are applied directly onto teeth in a single appointment using tooth-coloured composite resin, sculpted by the dentist to the desired shape and shade. This is a reversible procedure and can be repaired if chips occur. Composite veneers last 4–8 years and are a cost-effective entry point into smile design. Porcelain veneers are custom-fabricated by a dental laboratory and typically require two appointments — the first for tooth preparation and temporary veneers, and the second approximately 7–10 days later for permanent bonding. Porcelain is highly stain-resistant, produces a more natural translucency that mimics enamel, and lasts 10–15 years with proper care. The preparation is irreversible as a small amount of enamel is removed. Both types begin with a consultation where the dentist assesses suitability, discusses the desired outcome, and may use digital smile design to simulate the final result. X-rays and vitality tests may be required at additional cost. Veneers are unsuitable for patients with active gum disease, untreated tooth decay, or significant bite issues — these must be resolved first.
