HMI Medical's radiology suite at Farrer Park houses Singapore's first dual-source CT scanner, a significant clinical distinction that sets it apart from the conventional single-source CT systems found at most private centres. Dual-source CT uses two X-ray tubes operating simultaneously at different energy levels, producing two co-registered image datasets from a single scan pass. This dual-energy capability enables a range of clinically valuable applications that are impossible on standard CT. At low radiation doses — typically lower than a conventional CT — the dual-source system can differentiate kidney stone composition (urate versus calcium oxalate, which determines whether lithotripsy or dissolution therapy is appropriate), quantify gout crystal deposition in joints, assess bone marrow oedema patterns, and characterise soft-tissue densities with greater specificity. Cardiac CT angiography benefits particularly from dual-source capability: the high temporal resolution (enabled by two tubes rotating at different offsets) reduces cardiac motion artefact, allowing reliable coronary imaging even in patients with fast or irregular heart rates. For chest and oncological scanning, dual-energy CT improves lesion characterisation, vascular enhancement visualisation, and the detection of pulmonary emboli. Abdominal applications include liver lesion assessment, pancreatic ductal evaluation, and renal mass characterisation. The system is designed to minimise radiation exposure, using automated dose modulation and reconstruction algorithms that maintain diagnostic image quality at lower mAs settings.
