Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain produces high-resolution structural images without ionising radiation, using strong magnetic fields and radio waves to visualise soft tissue in detail that computed tomography (CT) cannot match. Helsa's brain MRI includes contrast enhancement — an intravenous gadolinium-based agent that improves visualisation of blood vessels, inflammation, and certain lesion types. The scan captures detailed images of brain parenchyma, ventricles, white matter tracts, and vascular structures. It can identify a range of findings including structural abnormalities, white matter lesions, signs of previous cerebrovascular events, and volumetric changes that may be relevant to age-related cognitive decline. While no single imaging study can diagnose neurodegenerative disease in isolation, structural MRI provides an important baseline that can be compared over time and correlated with clinical findings and biomarker data.
