A colonoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible camera is inserted through the rectum to examine the entire length of the large intestine (colon) for polyps, tumours, and other abnormalities. It is the gold-standard screening method for colorectal cancer — Australia's second most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer death. During the procedure, any polyps found can be removed immediately, preventing them from developing into cancer. At HealthScreen, colonoscopy is available as an add-on to diagnostic programs when clinically indicated. It is performed by Dr. David Badov, the Medical Director, who has over 30 years of experience in gastroenterology. The procedure is carried out under sedation at the Hampton Day Hospital facility in Melbourne. Australian guidelines recommend colonoscopy screening for anyone over 50, those with a family history of colorectal cancer, or anyone who has received a positive faecal immunochemical test (FIT).
