HIV testing remains a cornerstone of sexual health screening and is recommended by Dutch public health guidelines for individuals who may have been exposed through unprotected sexual contact, shared needles, or other transmission routes. This add-on screens for antibodies to both HIV-1 (the most prevalent type globally) and HIV-2 (more common in West Africa) from the same venous blood draw used for the Personal Health Check. The test uses a fourth-generation combination assay that detects both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, providing earlier detection than older antibody-only methods. The window period — the time between potential exposure and reliable detection — is typically two to four weeks for combination assays, though guidelines recommend testing at least six weeks after a potential exposure for definitive results. Results are delivered confidentially as part of the Health Report. A reactive (positive) screening result would require confirmatory testing through the Dutch public health system. This add-on is suitable for routine sexual health screening, pre-travel health assessments, or anyone who wants the reassurance of a current HIV status alongside their general health check.
