Hepatitis B is a viral infection that targets the liver and can range from a short-term acute illness to a chronic condition with long-term liver damage potential. The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 296 million people worldwide live with chronic hepatitis B, many of whom are unaware of their status because the infection can remain asymptomatic for years while silently causing liver inflammation and fibrosis. This add-on screens for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), the primary marker indicating active infection. A positive result means the virus is currently present in the bloodstream, whether the infection is acute or chronic. The test is drawn from the same venous sample as the Personal Health Check, requiring no additional appointment or blood draw. Results are delivered within the standard three to five business day window as part of the personalised Health Report. The test is particularly relevant for individuals who were born in or have lived in regions with higher hepatitis B prevalence, those who may have been exposed through unprotected sexual contact or medical procedures in areas with less stringent blood safety protocols, and healthcare workers or others in occupational risk categories. It also serves as a useful baseline for travellers and expatriates. At EUR 39, it adds a meaningful hepatic safety check to the broader screening without significant additional cost.
