Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the skin that binds water and thereby helps give the skin volume and elasticity; as injectable filler it is used to soften nasolabial folds, marionette lines and perioral "smoker's lines", to add subtle volume and definition to the lips, to contour the cheeks and chin, and to address fine lines on the cheeks or décolleté. A treatment usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. Results are visible immediately, with the final outcome settling over a few days as any minor swelling resolves; downtime is minimal and light redness or swelling typically subsides within one to two days. How long results last depends on the area, skin type and lifestyle, but commonly ranges from around six to twelve months.
