Hyperhidrosis Treatment (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis treatment uses botulinum toxin to control excessive, uncontrollable sweating, most commonly in the underarms, palms and soles. The toxin blocks the nerve signals that trigger the sweat glands, dramatically reducing sweat in the treated area. Primary hyperhidrosis is sweating well beyond what the body needs to cool itself — soaking the underarms, dripping from the palms or wetting the soles regardless of temperature or activity. It can be socially distressing and difficult to control with antiperspirants alone. Botulinum toxin offers an effective, non-surgical solution: injected just under the skin, it blocks the chemical messenger (acetylcholine) that the nerves use to switch on the eccrine sweat glands, so the glands in the treated zone produce far less sweat. After the area is assessed and, for the palms and soles, numbed (these areas are more sensitive), the doctor places a grid of small, shallow injections across the treatment zone using very fine needles; a starch-iodine test is sometimes used to map the most active sweating areas first. An underarm treatment takes only twenty to thirty minutes. There is no downtime — you can return to normal activities the same day, avoiding strenuous exercise and saunas for the rest of the day. The reduction in sweating typically begins within a few days and is fully established within two weeks, lasting around six to twelve months before the nerve endings regenerate and a repeat treatment is scheduled.
