About this treatment
A porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown is a long-established way to restore a tooth that needs full coverage. It is built on a thin metal coping for strength, over which dental porcelain is layered to give a tooth-coloured surface. The treatment usually takes two visits. At the first, the dentist removes any decay and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown, takes an impression and fits a temporary acrylic crown so the tooth is protected and usable while the laboratory works.
