Type
Extraction
Duration
45 min
Removal of a tooth that cannot be saved — through extensive decay, fracture, advanced gum disease or crowding — carried out as gently as possible under local anaesthesia. Straightforward teeth are removed by a simple extraction, while broken-down, impacted or difficult teeth may need a minor surgical procedure. The dentist explains aftercare to support smooth healing and discusses options for replacing the tooth where appropriate.
An extraction is recommended when a tooth is too damaged or diseased to be restored, when it is severely loose from advanced gum disease, or occasionally to relieve crowding. At Family Dent the priority is to make the procedure as calm and comfortable as possible: the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic — delivered with computer-controlled, near-painless technique where preferred — and inhalation sedation is available for anxious patients. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is intact enough to be lifted out whole, and is usually quick. Where a tooth is badly broken down at the gum line, has curved or fused roots, or is impacted (such as a partially erupted wisdom tooth), a surgical extraction is needed. This involves a small incision and sometimes sectioning the tooth so it can be removed in pieces, followed by stitches to help the site heal; it is priced higher to reflect the additional time and skill. Milk teeth in children are removed gently and are priced separately. Afterwards you are given clear aftercare instructions — on managing bleeding, swelling and discomfort, and protecting the clot to avoid a painful dry socket — and the clinic can discuss replacing a missing tooth later with a bridge, denture or implant so function and appearance are maintained. Suitability, medical history and any need for antibiotics are reviewed before the procedure.
