Type

Crowns & Bridges

Duration

1 hour

A fixed bridge to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a replacement tooth to the neighbouring teeth, restoring your bite and smile without a removable denture. The clinic offers a minimally invasive fibreglass-reinforced bridge as well as conventional porcelain bridges built on crowned supporting teeth. The right option depends on the gap, the condition of the adjacent teeth and your preferences, discussed at a planning consultation.

A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth by joining an artificial tooth (a pontic) to support points on either side, so the replacement is fixed in place rather than removable. Closing the gap restores chewing and speech, maintains the appearance of the smile, and helps stop the neighbouring and opposing teeth from drifting or over-erupting into the space over time. Family Dent offers more than one approach. A fibreglass-reinforced bridge is a more conservative, lower-cost option that uses a high-strength fibre framework to support the replacement tooth with minimal or no preparation of the adjacent teeth, which can be ideal for a single front gap. A conventional bridge uses full crowns on the teeth either side of the gap as anchors, with the pontic fused between them; this is priced per unit and can be made in porcelain-fused-to-metal or metal-free all-ceramic to match the rest of the smile. Treatment begins with a prosthetic consultation and plan, after which the supporting teeth are prepared where required, an impression or scan is taken, and the laboratory fabricates the bridge for fitting and cementation at a later visit. Where a tooth has been missing for some time or the adjacent teeth are healthy and unrestored, the dentist may also discuss an implant as an alternative that avoids crowning neighbouring teeth. Good cleaning around and beneath the bridge, supported by regular hygiene visits, helps it last well.
