For hair removal, the Nd:YAG wavelength is the primary modality: its longer wavelength penetrates to 3–6 mm beneath the skin surface, reaching the hair follicle bulge and bulb region where the stem cells responsible for hair growth reside. The melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the laser energy, converting it to heat that diffuses into the follicle and damages the surrounding vasculature and follicular epithelium — a process called selective photothermolysis.
