The carbon laser peel — colloquially called the Hollywood Peel for its popularity with clients seeking rapid pre-event skin improvement — exploits the chromophore properties of carbon black. Carbon particles are applied as a liquid mask and allowed to dry and penetrate into pores and hair follicle openings. A Q-switched or long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser (1064nm) is then passed over the skin; the laser light is selectively absorbed by the black carbon particles, which undergo rapid photothermal conversion — the particles heat almost instantaneously, vaporising the surface debris adhered to them and creating a micro-shock wave that mechanically clears the pore.
