Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide that occurs naturally in the skin and connective tissue, holding water and giving tissue its plumpness. As the skin ages, HA levels drop and the facial fat compartments shift or shrink, leading to volume loss, hollowing under the eyes, flattening of the cheeks and deepening of nasolabial folds. Injectable HA fillers physically replace this volume: the gel is injected in precise quantities at the correct tissue depth, where it integrates with surrounding tissue and draws water to maintain the result. A fine cannula or needle is used depending on the area and technique; topical anaesthetic cream or lidocaine-containing filler reduces discomfort. The injection itself takes between twenty and sixty minutes depending on the complexity of the treatment plan.
