Tooth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lift staining and lighten the underlying shade of the enamel, and Estedent lists three distinct options. In-office whitening applies a stronger gel in the surgery, accelerated by a whitening lamp or laser, and is the quickest route to a visibly brighter smile in a single appointment. For a tooth that has darkened after losing its nerve, internal (non-vital) whitening treats that single tooth from the inside and is listed together with the cost of the composite filling needed to seal it afterwards. Whitening is normally preceded by a check-up and professional cleaning so the gel acts on a healthy, plaque-free surface, and the dentist will confirm that the teeth and gums are suitable and that existing fillings or crowns — which do not change colour with bleaching — are accounted for in the plan. Temporary tooth sensitivity is a commonly reported effect that typically settles after treatment. Results are associated with a lighter, more even tooth colour, with longevity depending on diet, smoking and maintenance; periodic top-ups with take-home trays can help sustain the effect. Because whitening only affects natural teeth, patients planning veneers or crowns are usually advised to whiten first so new restorations can be matched to the lighter shade.
