A zirconia crown is fabricated from zirconium-oxide, one of the strongest dental ceramics available, giving it excellent resistance to fracture and wear. This makes it a dependable choice for molars and for people who clench or grind, while still being tooth-coloured and free of any metal core. Like other crowns, it fully encases a tooth that has been weakened by decay, cracks, large fillings or root canal treatment, restoring its strength, shape and function. At Erwin Clinic the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic and a digital scan or impression is taken so the crown can be milled to fit precisely; a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime. The finished zirconia crown is fitted, and the bite is refined for comfortable chewing. Where several teeth are missing, the same material can be used to make a full-ceramic bridge, priced per unit, that spans the gap by joining crowns on the teeth or implants on either side. Zirconia is particularly useful where strength is the priority, while E-MAX may be preferred for the most translucent front-tooth aesthetics; the dentist advises on the best material for each tooth.
