A surgical extraction removes a tooth that cannot be taken out simply — such as an impacted, broken-down or retained tooth — using a minor oral-surgery technique. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth cannot be removed with simple forceps alone — for example when it is impacted, has broken at the gum line, has curved or fragile roots, or is only partially erupted, as with some wisdom teeth. The dentist gently raises the gum, may remove a small amount of bone or divide the tooth into sections, and lifts it out in pieces, before cleaning and stitching the site to support healing. Carrying this out properly reduces trauma and helps recovery.
