Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that cannot be saved or is causing problems, carried out under local anaesthetic. An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw. It may be needed when a tooth is too badly decayed or broken to restore, when severe gum disease has loosened it, for impacted or poorly positioned wisdom teeth, or to make room as part of a wider treatment plan. The aim is always to remove the tooth as gently as possible while protecting the surrounding bone and tissue. At EM Dent a simple extraction is performed under local anaesthetic so the area is fully numb; the dentist loosens and removes the tooth and gives advice on caring for the socket as it heals. Some teeth require a surgical approach — for example impacted wisdom teeth, teeth that are broken at the gum line, or roots that need to be removed in sections — which may involve raising a small flap of gum, removing a little bone or dividing the tooth, and placing stitches. The clinic's implantology-trained dentist carries out more complex surgical cases, and a surgical consultation can be arranged beforehand to assess the tooth, often with the help of in-house CBCT or panoramic imaging. Inhalation sedation is available for patients who feel nervous. Afterwards the dentist explains how to manage bleeding, swelling and discomfort, and discusses options for replacing the tooth, such as an implant, bridge or denture, where appropriate.
