Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, then cleans, shapes and seals the canals so the natural tooth can be kept. Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or trauma allows bacteria to reach the pulp it can become inflamed or infected, causing pain or an abscess. Root canal (endodontic) treatment removes this damaged tissue, disinfects and shapes the fine canals inside the roots, and fills them with a sealing material so the tooth can be saved rather than extracted. At EM Dent endodontic treatment is carried out under an operating microscope, which magnifies and illuminates the inside of the tooth to help the dentist locate the canals — which can be narrow, curved or hard to find — and treat them thoroughly. The tooth is numbed and isolated, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the tooth is sealed; depending on its condition it may be rebuilt to support a later crown, which is often recommended on back teeth to protect them. The number of canals varies by tooth, which is why the fee is set accordingly. Teeth that were root-filled previously but have developed new problems can sometimes be re-treated — the old filling is removed and the canals re-cleaned — and the clinic prices this separately. The dentist will explain whether the tooth is restorable, how many visits are likely and what aftercare is needed; mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
