Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) is a well-established procedure in which a motorised pen fitted with fine sterile needles creates thousands of micro-channels in the skin's surface. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin's wound-healing cascade — proliferation of fibroblasts, synthesis of new collagen type I and III, and elastin production — leading to progressive skin thickening, firming, and surface smoothing. At Edwin Lim Medical Aesthetic Clinic, medical microneedling is performed at needle depths and speeds determined by the area being treated and the concern being addressed. Superficial settings (0.2–0.5 mm) are used for transdermal drug delivery — enhancing absorption of skinbooster serums, PRP, vitamins, or growth factor concentrates deep into the dermis. Deeper settings (1.0–2.5 mm) are reserved for atrophic acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks, where deeper dermal remodelling is required. Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied for 30–45 minutes to ensure comfort. The treatment itself takes approximately 20–30 minutes depending on the area covered; the face, neck, and décolletage can all be treated. Post-treatment, the skin appears pink to red (similar to a mild sunburn) for 24–48 hours, after which a period of mild flaking may occur as fresh skin emerges. Four to six sessions at monthly intervals are recommended for significant scar improvement; skin quality and fine lines typically improve with three to four sessions. Microneedling at the clinic can be combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to further accelerate healing and collagen induction, a combination sometimes referred to as the 'vampire facial.' Active serums, including those from the clinic's own medical-grade skincare range, are also applied during the micro-channel open window for maximum penetration.
