Unlike permanent implants or older silicone procedures, HA fillers are fully reversible with hyaluronidase if the result is not satisfactory, and they integrate naturally into lip tissue without creating the telltale pillow or duck-lip appearance that results from overfilling or incorrect injection technique. The treating physician first assesses the patient's natural lip shape, facial proportions, and aesthetic goals during a brief consultation at the start of the session. The injection plan considers the ratio of upper to lower lip (classically 1:1.6), the degree of vermillion border definition, the position of the cupid's bow, and any pre-existing asymmetry. Product is then placed at the vermillion border, into the body of the lips, and at the commissures as needed — each site requiring a specific technique, needle gauge, and HA product viscosity for optimal results. Hyaluronic acid is hygroscopic — it attracts and retains water molecules — which contributes to the plumping effect over the first 2 to 4 weeks as the filler settles and hydrates the surrounding tissue. The final result is generally visible 2 to 3 weeks after the session. Duration is typically 9 to 12 months before a maintenance session is recommended, though metabolically active patients may notice gradual softening at 6 to 9 months. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied before the procedure to minimise discomfort. Most premium HA lip fillers also contain lidocaine in their formulation, which further reduces sensitivity during injection. Mild swelling and occasional bruising are normal for 24 to 72 hours after the session. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment.
