Bruxism is involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, often during sleep or under stress, which can lead to jaw tension, tooth wear and an over-developed, bulky jaw muscle. Botulinum toxin treatment targets the masseter — the main muscle that closes the jaw — with carefully placed injections that reduce how forcefully it contracts. As the muscle relaxes over the following weeks, clenching and grinding are eased and, because the masseter gradually becomes less bulky, the lower face can also look slimmer and softer. At Dr Luch the physician first assesses the strength and size of the jaw muscles and discusses your symptoms. The injections take around ten to fifteen minutes using a fine needle, with little or no downtime; you can return to normal activities the same day. The effect typically begins within one to two weeks and lasts around three to four months, after which the treatment can be repeated. Many people combine the functional benefit — reduced jaw tension and grinding — with the cosmetic effect of a more tapered jawline.
