Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution. They tend to have a firmer feel than silicone options and allow a smaller incision, since the shell is filled after placement.

Silicone (cohesive gel) implants have a softer feel often described as more similar to natural breast tissue. Modern cohesive gel formulations maintain their shape even if the outer shell is compromised.
