Laser hair removal at Dr. Kolker's practice uses the DiOlaze diode laser — a modern platform designed to provide effective and comfortable hair reduction across a range of skin types and hair colours. Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: laser energy at a wavelength highly absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle is pulsed precisely long enough to heat the follicle's bulge region and bulb (the structures responsible for hair regrowth) to a damaging temperature, while the surrounding skin absorbs less energy and remains at a lower temperature. The DiOlaze operates at a diode wavelength that achieves effective depth of penetration to reach the hair follicle while its integrated cooling system protects the skin surface. Because laser energy is only effective on follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase — and at any given time only a portion of follicles are in anagen — multiple treatment sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart are required to progressively address the full follicle population as each hair enters its growth phase. A typical course of six to eight sessions achieves substantial long-term hair reduction in most patients, with maintenance sessions thereafter for complete control. Treatment areas include the upper lip, chin, sideburns, underarms, bikini line, legs, back, shoulders, and chest. Sessions are fast for smaller areas — the upper lip in minutes, full legs in thirty to sixty minutes. Post-treatment, mild redness at treated follicle sites resolves within hours. Patients should avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products before and between sessions. Annual maintenance sessions may be needed as hormonal changes can activate dormant follicles over time.
