A strong topical anaesthetic is applied and the filler products also contain lidocaine, so the procedure is generally well tolerated. The gel is placed with a fine needle or cannula and shaped by hand; results are immediate, though lips commonly swell for 24–48 hours and small bruises can occur. The final shape is usually clear within one to two weeks.
