A crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth, used when a tooth is too damaged, cracked or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling. By encasing the tooth, the crown restores its natural shape and biting surface and protects the remaining structure from further fracture — which is why crowns are routinely recommended after root-canal treatment, when the underlying tooth becomes more brittle. Where a root-treated tooth has lost a lot of structure, a post-and-core build-up may be needed first to support the crown, which is quoted separately.
