Male hormone assessment with LH, FSH, SHBG, testosterone, and TSH. At €90.34, a thorough screen for hypogonadism, fertility concerns, and age-related hormonal changes. Includes the pituitary hormones needed to distinguish primary from secondary testosterone deficiency.

This panel provides the minimum set of hormones needed to evaluate male reproductive and metabolic health comprehensively. Total testosterone is the headline marker, but its clinical interpretation depends on SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), which determines how much testosterone is biologically available. A man with high SHBG may have low free testosterone despite normal total testosterone — explaining symptoms of hypogonadism that routine testing misses. LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) are pituitary hormones that drive testicular function. Their levels distinguish primary hypogonadism (testicular failure — high LH/FSH, low testosterone) from secondary hypogonadism (pituitary/hypothalamic — low LH/FSH, low testosterone). This distinction is clinically critical because secondary hypogonadism may be caused by pituitary tumours, hyperprolactinaemia, or medications, requiring different investigation and treatment. FSH specifically reflects spermatogenesis — elevated FSH with low sperm count indicates testicular damage, while normal FSH with low count suggests obstructive causes. This makes the panel relevant for fertility assessment. TSH is included because thyroid dysfunction mimics many symptoms of testosterone deficiency: fatigue, weight changes, mood disturbance, and reduced libido. Hypothyroidism also directly impairs testosterone production. Age-related testosterone decline (1–2% per year from age 30) is a normal process, but symptoms of deficiency warrant investigation when they significantly impact quality of life. This panel provides the data needed for informed clinical decisions.

Preparation Required

Morning draw essential — testosterone peaks between 07:00 and 10:00. Fasting not required but morning draw helps.

Men’s Health Panel

Biomarkers Tested

8
4-OH Oestradiol ng/mL

Metabolite of estradiol.

5α-DHT mg/day

5α-Dihydrotestosterone, a potent androgen.

DHEA-S µg/dL

Precursor to other hormones

Epi-Testosterone mg/day

Metabolite of testosterone.

Free PSA ng/mL

Measures only the unbound PSA in the blood.

Free Testosterone pg/mL

The unbound, biologically active fraction of testosterone (typically 1–3% of total). Free testosterone is the form that can enter cells and exert effects. More clinically relevant than total testosterone for assessing hormonal status.

LH to FSH Ratio ratio

Normally 1:1; higher ratios (e.g., 2:1 or 3:1) may indicate PCOS.

SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin) nmol/L

A protein that binds and transports sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen) in the blood. High SHBG reduces the amount of free, active hormones available. SHBG increases with age, thyroid hormones, and estrogen; decreases with obesity and insulin resistance.
