Laser Hair Removal — LightSheer DUET

The diode wavelength (810 nm) targets melanin in the hair follicle shaft; thermal energy travels to the follicle bulb, permanently disabling the growth centre. Because only 15–25% of follicles are in the active growth phase at any one time, 4–8 sessions per area are needed to achieve lasting reduction.

The LightSheer Lumenis DUET is a diode laser operating at 810 nm — a wavelength that sits in the optimal absorption window for melanin while penetrating deeply enough to reach the follicle bulb (located 3–7 mm below the skin surface depending on body region). This targeting precision means the laser selectively heats the follicle without significant absorption in the surrounding dermis, making it suitable across a wide range of skin tones. The DUET platform is distinguished by its high-speed (HS) handpiece, which uses integrated vacuum suction and mechanical skin stabilisation rather than the cold gel that older diode systems require. Vacuum stretches the skin and draws the follicle slightly closer to the surface, increasing energy absorption at the bulb. The result is effective follicular destruction at lower fluences (energy per cm²), which reduces discomfort and eliminates the need for topical anaesthetic for most body areas. The large spot size of the HS handpiece — substantially larger than standard diode applicators — allows rapid coverage: a full back can be treated in under 20 minutes, both legs in a comparable time. Treatment is available for women and men across all body regions where persistent hair growth is unwanted. The mechanism is selective photothermolysis: the 810 nm pulse is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft, generating heat that conducts down the shaft to the follicle bulb (the dermal papilla and follicular stem cell zone), destroying these structures and preventing future hair growth from that follicle. Because follicle activity is cyclical — any given follicle spends only 15–25% of its time in the active anagen (growth) phase when it is susceptible to laser damage — multiple treatment sessions are required to intercept each follicle during its vulnerable phase. Four to eight sessions per area, spaced approximately 3–4 weeks apart, are the standard requirement for lasting hair reduction. Pre-treatment requirements: no plucking, waxing, or electrolysis for at least 2 weeks before each session (the shaft must be present to conduct heat to the bulb). Shave the area 1–2 days before the session. Avoid fresh tan or active UV exposure for 4 weeks before, and do not have the treatment over an actively tanned area — the increased epidermal melanin competes with follicular melanin and raises the risk of surface burns. Aftercare is minimal: mild redness for a few hours is normal. No gel or dressing is needed. SPF sunscreen should be applied over treated areas during sun exposure in the weeks following sessions. The treated hairs shed gradually over 2–3 weeks post-session rather than falling out immediately. The treatment is not effective on white, grey, blond, or very light red hair because these lack the melanin needed for photothermolysis.
