Vascular and pigmentation laser treatment uses wavelengths of light that are preferentially absorbed by haemoglobin in small blood vessels or by melanin in areas of pigmentation. The absorbed energy converts to heat that is associated with collapse of the targeted vessel or breakdown of excess pigment, which the body then gradually clears, leaving a more even, brighter complexion. The same family of treatments includes photo-rejuvenation, which refreshes overall tone and addresses diffuse redness and sun damage. At Dermamed the skin is cleansed and protective eyewear worn, and the laser is passed over the targeted areas; sessions are usually short, around fifteen to thirty minutes for the face. You may notice brief warmth and temporary redness, and pigment spots can darken slightly before flaking away over the following days. Depending on the concern — scattered broken capillaries, redness, sunspots or general dullness — a single session may be enough or a short course may be advised, with results building over the weeks after treatment. Sun protection before and after is important, particularly for pigmentation work. The treatment is not suitable over certain skin conditions or recently tanned skin and is avoided in pregnancy; suitability and the most appropriate settings are assessed by the clinic before treatment.
