Laser hair removal uses a focused beam of light absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. The light energy converts to heat and damages the follicle's ability to regrow hair, while the surrounding skin is protected — at DermaDerm by the Vectus diode laser, which combines a contact-cooling sapphire tip and a sizeable spot to treat areas comfortably and efficiently. Because each hair is only vulnerable during its active growth phase, and only a portion of hairs are in that phase at any time, several sessions spaced a few weeks apart are needed to achieve a marked, lasting reduction. At the appointment the area is shaved if needed, protective eyewear is worn and the laser is passed over the skin; most people describe a warm snapping sensation eased by the built-in cooling. Sessions range from a few minutes for a small zone such as the upper lip to longer for the legs or back. Afterwards the skin may be slightly pink for a short time, and treated hairs shed over the following days to weeks. A typical course is several sessions, after which occasional maintenance keeps the area smooth.
