DermaPen Microneedling

Type

Microneedling

Duration

1 hour

DermaPen is an automated microneedling device that drives fine needles vertically into the skin at adjustable depths from 0.25 mm to 3 mm, creating thousands of controlled micro-channels that trigger the skin's natural wound-healing cascade. The controlled micro-trauma stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis without damaging the surrounding epidermal surface. At Derma Medical Clinic, a customised mesoglide serum — hyaluronic acid, antioxidant complex, acne serum, beta-glucan or PRP — is applied during the treatment and driven into the micro-channels for enhanced delivery. Indications include wrinkles, acne and acne scarring, stretch marks, pigmentation and general skin rejuvenation.

Microneedling exploits the same wound-healing biology that underlies fractional laser treatment but without thermal energy: fine needles penetrate the skin vertically, creating precise micro-injuries in the dermis that signal the body to initiate repair. The inflammatory response recruits growth factors — including TGF-beta, PDGF and EGF — that activate resident fibroblasts to produce new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Because the injury is mechanical rather than thermal, healing is rapid and the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is lower than with ablative laser, making DermaPen suitable for a broader range of skin tones. The DermaPen device at Derma Medical Clinic uses a disposable needle cartridge — discarded after each patient for full sterility — driven by a motor that controls the rate and depth of penetration with precision unavailable to manual dermarollers. The vertical needle entry, as opposed to the angled insertion of a roller, also reduces the mechanical drag on skin cells that can cause micro-tears and epidermal disruption. Needle depth is calibrated to the target concern: superficial depths (0.25–0.5 mm) for fine lines, surface texture and product delivery; intermediate depths (0.5–1.5 mm) for hyperpigmentation and general rejuvenation; deeper settings (1.5–3 mm) for established acne scarring, stretch marks and significant structural improvement. Before the session, numbing cream is applied for thirty to forty-five minutes. During treatment, the practitioner passes the DermaPen handpiece across the skin in overlapping passes, covering the entire treatment zone systematically. Immediately afterwards, a mesoglide serum is applied and worked into the open micro-channels — one of the key clinical advantages of microneedling is that the temporary micro-channels provide direct dermal access for active ingredients that cannot normally penetrate the intact stratum corneum. The serum is matched to the patient's primary concern: hyaluronic acid for hydration and volume, beta-glucan for calming and barrier repair, dedicated acne serum for congested or breakout-prone skin, or the patient's own PRP for maximal regenerative stimulus. Recovery after DermaPen is mild compared to ablative treatments: the skin appears red and feels warm for twelve to twenty-four hours, and mild peeling or dryness may persist for three to five days. A course of four to six sessions spaced three to four weeks apart is standard for established acne scarring or structural improvement; maintenance sessions every six to twelve months sustain the result. Each session produces cumulative improvement as new collagen matures over the weeks following treatment.
