A chemical peel uses a carefully chosen acid solution to loosen and remove the outermost layers of the skin in a controlled way, prompting the surface to renew itself more evenly. Gentler superficial peels — mandelic, salicylic, lactic or low-strength glycolic — cause little more than light flaking and can be done in a short course every few weeks.
