All-Ceramic Crown

Type

Crowns & Bridges

Duration

1 hour

A full-ceramic crown that caps a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. Dentica uses a CEREC CAD/CAM system to design and mill ceramic crowns — and in many cases provide them in a single visit — with zirconia and endocrown options also available. Metal-free ceramics give a natural translucency well suited to both front and back teeth.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth that has been weakened by extensive decay, a large filling, a fracture or root canal treatment. By covering the whole visible part of the tooth, the crown restores its shape and biting strength and protects what remains of the natural tooth. At Dentica crowns are made from tooth-coloured ceramic rather than metal-based materials, which gives a more lifelike translucency and avoids any dark line at the gum. The practice's CEREC CAD/CAM technology allows much of this work to be done digitally: the prepared tooth is scanned, the crown is designed on screen and then milled from a ceramic block, so in many cases a definitive all-ceramic restoration can be designed, produced and fitted within a single appointment — convenient for patients travelling from out of town or abroad. The clinic also offers zirconia crowns, valued for their strength, and more conservative alternatives such as endocrowns and overlays, which restore a root-treated or heavily worn tooth while preserving more of the remaining structure than a full crown. Fitting involves preparing the tooth, taking a scan or impression, checking the fit and bite, and bonding or cementing the restoration. A well-made ceramic crown can blend closely with neighbouring teeth; good day-to-day cleaning and regular reviews are associated with longer-lasting results. The dentist will advise which type of restoration best suits the tooth in question.
