3D Cone-Beam CT Scan (CBCT)

Type

CT Scan

Duration

20 min

A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan that produces a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures. On-site 3D imaging supports accurate planning for dental implants, surgical extractions and complex root canal treatment by showing bone volume, root anatomy and the position of nerves and sinuses. Both-jaw and single-arch scans are available.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a dental 3D imaging technique that captures the teeth, jawbone, nerves and sinuses in three dimensions, giving far more information than a standard flat X-ray. Having this scan available on site allows the clinic to plan treatment precisely and safely. For dental implants it reveals the height, width and quality of available bone so an implant can be positioned accurately; for surgical extractions, such as impacted wisdom teeth, it shows the relationship of roots to nerves and the sinus; and for endodontic cases it helps map complex root canal anatomy. The scan itself is quick and straightforward: you remain still for a short time while the scanner rotates around your head to acquire the images, which are then reconstructed into a 3D model the dentist can examine from any angle. A scan of both jaws is available, as are lower-cost single-arch scans of just the upper jaw (maxilla) or lower jaw (mandible) when only one area needs to be assessed. CBCT uses a focused, relatively low dose of radiation compared with medical CT, and is only taken when the diagnostic benefit justifies it. The detailed imaging underpins many of the clinic's implant, surgical and prosthetic treatments and helps the dentist explain findings and plans clearly. Where a scan is taken as part of planning a larger treatment, the dentist will explain how it fits into the overall pathway and cost.
