Root Canal Treatment (Microscopic Endodontics)

Type

Root Canal

Duration

2 hours

Microscope-assisted root canal treatment to save a tooth whose nerve has become inflamed or infected, relieving pain and removing infection from inside the tooth. The canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed, and the tooth is built back up. Working under magnification helps the dentist locate and treat fine or curved canals accurately. Computer-controlled anaesthesia keeps the procedure comfortable, and sedation is available for anxious patients.

Root canal (endodontic) treatment is carried out when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp, which contains the nerve and blood vessels — becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected, usually because of deep decay, a crack or trauma. Rather than removing the tooth, the treatment cleans the infection from inside it, allowing the natural tooth to be kept. It is the standard way to relieve the severe ache of an abscessed or dying tooth while preserving the bite. At Dental Corner endodontic treatment is performed under a dental microscope, which magnifies and illuminates the inside of the tooth so the clinician can find every canal — including the narrow, curved or extra canals that are easy to miss — and clean them thoroughly. After numbing the tooth with computer-controlled anaesthesia, the dentist removes the inflamed pulp, shapes and disinfects the canal system and fills it with a sealing material; X-rays from the in-house diagnostic lab confirm the canals are treated to the correct length. Because a root-treated tooth can become brittle, a crown or substantial restoration is usually recommended afterwards to protect it, and this is quoted separately. Nitrous-oxide sedation or general anaesthesia is available for patients who find dental treatment stressful. Root canal treatment suits adults and older children with a deeply decayed, infected or traumatised tooth that is worth saving; the dentist assesses the tooth's restorability beforehand and explains when extraction and replacement might be the better long-term choice.
