Type

Extraction

Duration

30 min

A tooth extraction removes a tooth that is too badly decayed, broken or loosened by gum disease to save, or that is causing crowding. DEN-MED carries out routine extractions under local anaesthetic, with more difficult cases requiring tooth separation priced higher and surgical or impacted wisdom-tooth removal handled by the maxillofacial team. Platelet-rich fibrin can be added to aid healing of the socket when appropriate.

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket, carried out when a tooth cannot be restored — for example because of extensive decay, a deep fracture, advanced gum disease or a failed previous treatment — or to relieve crowding before orthodontic work. At DEN-MED a straightforward extraction is performed under local anaesthetic so the area is fully numb; the dentist loosens the tooth and removes it, then gives aftercare advice to protect the healing socket. Some teeth need to be sectioned into pieces for atraumatic removal, which is reflected in a slightly higher fee. More involved cases — surgical extractions, broken-down roots and impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth — are managed by the practice's oral and maxillofacial surgery team and quoted separately according to complexity, with CBCT imaging used beforehand where the tooth lies close to a nerve or the sinus. To support recovery the clinic can prepare platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) from a small sample of the patient's own blood and place it in the socket, which is associated with helping the wound heal. After any extraction the dentist advises on managing bleeding, swelling and comfort, and on options to replace the missing tooth later, such as an implant or bridge, so that neighbouring teeth do not drift. Extraction suits patients with an unsalvageable or problematic tooth; the dentist confirms the approach and anaesthetic at assessment.
