A dental implant replaces a missing tooth at the root. A small, biocompatible titanium fixture is placed into the jawbone where it integrates with the surrounding bone over the following weeks, creating a firm anchor that behaves much like a natural root. Because the implant stands on its own, neighbouring healthy teeth are left untouched — unlike a conventional bridge, which relies on grinding down the teeth on either side. The surgery itself is done under local anaesthetic and is usually more comfortable than patients expect. After placement, a healing period of several weeks allows integration before the second stage, when the implant is uncovered, an abutment is fitted and a custom-made crown is attached to complete the restoration. If there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw, a sinus-lift procedure can be performed to build the site up first. Implants are a long-term option for replacing one or several teeth and are associated with preserving the surrounding jawbone, which tends to recede when a tooth is lost. Suitability depends on bone quality, gum health and general health, all of which are assessed before treatment.
